Dental implants
Dental implantation — is a surgery to restore lost teeth by implanting a titanium post — an artificial tooth root into the bone tissue of the jaw and then placing a dental crown.
Reasons to get implants
Missing teeth can have unpleasant consequences, even if they are not visually noticeable. In place of the lost tooth, the neighboring teeth shift — the bite and aesthetics of the smile change, and with them the facial features are deformed. The remaining teeth receive an uneven load, wear down and deteriorate more quickly. As a result, tooth preservation becomes a complex and expensive task compared to implanting a lost tooth all at once.
Alternatives to implants — dentures and bridges, can perform aesthetic and chewing functions, but they often require grinding of neighboring teeth, and instead of one lost tooth, two more are at risk. Orthopedic constructions need support — neighboring teeth, it is they take on additional chewing load and wear out many times faster. In addition, any additional structures in the mouth complicate hygiene and promote bacterial growth, i.e. increase the risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease.
Implantation — is a modern high-tech way to completely restore a tooth with its aesthetic and functional properties.
The implant made of titanium, which is fully compatible with the body, acts as the root of the tooth and takes over the entire chewing load. A crown is responsible for aesthetics, which is matched to the color and structure of the patient's tooth enamel and looks as natural as possible.

Benefits of implantation
-
Durability
97% of implants take root and replace lost teeth for decades. -
The health of neighboring teeth
The neighboring teeth are not put under additional stress, destroyed or displaced when chewing. -
Naturalness and aesthetics
The artificial tooth does not differ from the rest of the teeth. Placement of the post does not affect the appearance of the gums. -
Convenience
The implant can withstand the stress of chewing hard food and does not feel like a foreign object in the mouth.
-
Duration of treatment
Full implant engraftment takes 3 to 6 months. -
May require preparation
Sometimes bone integration or sinus elevator surgery is performed before implantation.
Implantation time
The pin installation operation itself takes 20-30 minutes, but the preparation for implantation is a long complex event.Classical two-stage implantation can take from 4 months to 1 year. Such a period is required for the implant to fully take root in the bone tissue, since it is a completely foreign object for the body. Only after full integration with the bone, the implant will be able to take on the chewing load with minimal risk of rejection.
Often when a tooth is missing for a long period of time, the bone tissue at the site of the lost tooth diminishes and the patient requires bone grafting — the augmentation of additional osteomaterial. Read more about preparing for implantation here
In some cases, one-stage implantation immediately after tooth extraction is possible, as well as implants All-on-4 with complete adentia with the installation of a conditionally removable prosthesis immediately.
The optimal treatment method is selected by a surgeon after a complete diagnosis.
Cost of implantation
The price of implants depends on the type of implantation, the implants and crowns chosen. Sinus elevator or bone augmentation surgery may also add to the cost.

Types of Implantation
Classical implantation
Implantation takes place in 2 stages — surgical, when the post itself is placed, and orthopedic — placement of the crown. The interval between the stages is 3-6 months. It is necessary for the full integration of the implant. In such an operation, the risk of inflammation and rejection is minimal, and after the process is completed, the patient can fully chew food and do not worry about the appearance.
The patient undergoes a consultation with a surgeon, does a CT scan, takes tests to determine the state of health and identify contraindications.
After diagnosis, the doctor makes a treatment plan, prescribes additional measures if necessary: sinus elevator, professional hygiene or sanitation.
The patient is given anesthesia — its effect is sufficient for a completely painless procedure. An incision is made in the gum for access to the bone. A special milling cutter grinds out the bed, where the implant is planted. After the pin is inserted, the gum is sutured.
Sutures are removed after 5-7 days at the follow-up examination.
The patient must follow the doctor's recommendations for effective and quick integration.
To make the gum look natural with the new crown, a gum shaper is placed on the implant.
Abutment replaces the gum shaper after 2 weeks. A customized crown is made according to the patient's impressions. After fitting and adjustments, the final version is placed on the abutment.

One-stage implantation
One visit implantation with simultaneous implant and crown placement is performed immediately after tooth extraction. The post is placed directly on the root of the extracted tooth without additional incision of the gum and bone. A temporary crown is attached to it, and after 3 months it is replaced with a permanent crown. This is to avoid stressing the implant at once and to give it a chance to settle in.
One-stage implantation is convenient and time-saving, but it requires certain conditions: sufficient volume and good bone density, healthy periodontium and neighboring teeth — it is they who will take on all the chewing load in the first months.
Is it painful to get implants?
Tooth implantation — is an uncomplicated and very common surgery in modern dentistry. Local anesthesia is sufficient to eliminate any sensitivity during the operation.
After the operation, the patient can go about his or her business as usual. Pain can be relieved in the first few days after surgery with painkillers recommended by the doctor.
Contraindications to implantation
Absolute contraindications in which surgery is impossible:
- Malignant tumors;
- Tuberculosis;
- Severe diseases of the cardiovascular, nervous and endocrine systems;
- Impaired tissue repair, for example, due to immunodeficiency or after chemotherapy and transplantation;
- Mental illness, alcohol and drug addiction.
Relative contraindications in which surgery should be delayed until the problem is corrected:
- Oral diseases: caries, periodontitis, tartar, cysts;
- Poor hygiene (increases the risk of rejection)
- Active smoking (increases the risk of rejection)
- Incorrect bite (implant cannot be placed correctly, not enough room for a crown)
Peculiarities of rehabilitation after implantation
- After the operation, it is necessary to exclude too hot, cold, spicy and solid food. Try not to chew on the side on which the implant is placed, do not use toothpicks;
- It is recommended to stop smoking for a month so that the tissues can recover;
- Limit heavy physical activity;
- Avoid temperature fluctuations: severe hypothermia, visits to the bath and sauna.
- Brush your teeth carefully without pressure at the surgery site, use a mouthwash and an irrigator.
It is normal to experience discomfort and pain in the first week after surgery; the body recovers from injury. Fever may rise, slight bleeding and redness of the gums.
Swelling and bruising disappear in 5-10 days.
Complications after implantation
Implantation — is a safe procedure and in most cases goes without serious complications. Swelling, fever or bleeding may occur after surgery — this is a normal reaction of the body and does not require medical attention.
Serious complications are:
-
Implant rejection. It is characterized by a feeling of mobility of the implant in the jaw and persistent pain. Rejection usually occurs due to lack of bone material, poor hygiene, infection or smoking. In the rarest cases, the cause is — an allergy to titanium.
Modern implants are created using the latest technology, are tested and take root in 97% of cases. The risk of rejection is usually increased by non-compliance with the rules of care.
- Overimplantitis — is inflammation around the implant caused by infection. It can be recognized by severe redness, growing swelling and suppuration at the surgical site. Infections are introduced due to poor diagnosis, such as undetected decay on a neighboring tooth, or poor hygiene.
Modern implantation is very technologically advanced and practically eliminates any complications . Re-implantation or rejection occur in 1-3% of cases. Most often, even after complications, an implant can be installed if the inflammation is neutralized in time, additional measures are taken to improve the conditions for implantation and careful care is followed.
Implantation — is a reliable way to restore teeth permanently without compromise and inconvenience. Implant manufacturers care about the quality of materials, constantly improving the technology. The task of the patient — find a doctor he will trust and follow the recommendations. In this case, the surgery and adaptation to the implant will go smoothly and painlessly.
