A comprehensive treatment plan in dentistry – is a plan to correct the patient's oral situation. It is prepared on the basis of consultations with dentists of different specialties and the results of diagnostic tests.
A comprehensive plan necessarily includes the following blocks:
- Description of the patient's situation and all violations identified during the examination.
- Possible solutions to the problems.
- Stages and terms of treatment.
- Methods, materials and cost.
Why do you need a comprehensive treatment plan?
Often dental problems are associated with unnoticeable causes, the elimination of which will avoid recurrences. Sometimes it is not possible to correct the situation with therapeutic treatment alone; the assistance of an orthopedist and periodontist is required. Orthodontic treatment is not always without surgical intervention. There are many such examples.
Having a comprehensive plan allows us to approach the issue of treatment in a systematic and complete manner. The patient's situation is analyzed from all sides, resulting in an optimal and most effective solution.p>
Which specialists should be consulted for a comprehensive treatment plan?
Since the comprehensive plan is aimed at total treatment, it involves dentists from different specialties: general practitioner, orthodontist, implant surgeon, periodontist, orthopedist, hygienist and radiologist.
It is almost impossible to be a highly professional multidisciplinary specialist. Each dentist has his or her own professional orientation in which he or she is maximally strong. Therefore, several subspecialists who are deeply versed in their field work on oral rehabilitation.
First reception
The number of doctors involved depends on each individual situation. However, you should first make an appointment with a general practitioner, who will then act as your supervisor or coordinator.
At the initial consultation, the patient is examined and talked to, an anamnesis is collected, all his/her concerns and wishes for the treatment result are identified, and diagnostic tests are prescribed. Based on their results, a first consultation of doctors of all necessary specialties is held and the next appointments are scheduled.
Diagnostics – a waste of money or a necessity?
No matter how good a dentist is, he or she will only get 30% of the information based on the examination and conversation with the patient. In order to get an overall picture and to draw up the most accurate treatment plan, diagnostic tests are mandatory.

- 3D digital radiography;
- determination of the hygiene index;
- hardware laser diagnostics of caries;
- photoprotocol;
- bite diagnosis;
- periodontal diagnosis;
- orthopedic diagnostics.
The choice of necessary diagnostic methods in each specific case is discussed with the supervising physician. In addition, you may be recommended to undergo examinations by specialists in other medical fields, including laboratory tests.
Predicting the result
At our clinic, we offer you two stages of visualizing the results of a comprehensive treatment plan:
- Computerized Smile Design – this is a virtual model of your smile after treatment, which we show you using software on a computer.
- Wax modeling – is a tangible model of your teeth, a planned result achieved through the methods described in the comprehensive plan and which you can «try on » in order to assess whether it meets your expectations.
Accepting the proposed treatment plan, making adjustments to it or refusing treatment is accompanied by a discussion between the patient and the doctor.
The doctor's task is to tell about all possible treatment options and the results achieved with their help, to advise about the probable risks of refusing a number of diagnostic tests, changing materials, excluding some stages of treatment and about the consequences of refusing it.
The decision is always up to the patient, but it is the physician's responsibility to provide the patient with comprehensive information.
Why do comprehensive treatment plans vary from clinic to clinic?
One clinic will have one treatment plan, another clinic – another. This is due to a number of factors. A comprehensive treatment plan depends on:
- the availability of certain specialists in the clinic;
- the experience and knowledge of the clinic's doctors;
- technical equipment of the clinic;
- level of interaction between physicians, quality transfer of information about the patient's treatment to each other.
