One of the most common methods of restoring the crown part of the tooth — prosthetics with metal-ceramic crowns.

A metal-ceramic crown — is a prosthetic design with a metal base and a ceramic coating that mimics natural tooth tissue in color and structure.

Types of metal-ceramic crowns:

Ceramic crowns — are the most aesthetically pleasing replacement for your teeth. Ceramics are very close in color, translucency and texture to natural tooth tissue. Depending on your prosthetic goals and budget, different types of ceramic crowns are used:

  1. A crown with a base made of inexpensive alloys — cobalt-chromium or nickel-chromium. This is one of the most affordable types of crowns. Their disadvantage is that the metal base shines through the translucent ceramic and gives the artificial crown an unnatural look that distinguishes it from your own teeth.
  2. With a base of precious metal alloys — gold, platinum, palladium. These alloys are less likely to cause allergic reactions, and the gold alloy gives the tooth a more natural shade than other metals.
  3. Crowns with a base milled using CAD/CAM technology. This technology, unlike casting, uses computer modeling and allows you to create the most accurate shape of the crown. The finished crown adheres perfectly to the tooth tissue, which significantly increases the life of the crown and reduces oral health risks. These metal-ceramic crowns are much more expensive due to the complexity of the fabrication technology.

Advantages and disadvantages of metal-ceramic crowns

Advantages:
  • Affordable price compared to other modern prosthetic options. At its cost, the crown has sufficient strength and satisfactory aesthetic qualities.

  • The ability of metal to withstand significant chewing loads. Metal-ceramic crowns are convenient and functional for use on chewing teeth where strength and, to a lesser extent, aesthetic qualities are important.

  • Durability. With quality installation and compliance with recommendations, such a crown will last up to 10 years.

Disadvantages:
    • Base metals can cause allergies in some patients. The most hypoallergenic variant of a metal-ceramic crown is gold or platinum alloy.

    • Different in color from natural teeth, not recommended for frontal teeth. The metal base is slightly translucent under the translucent layer of ceramic, giving the artificial tooth a grayish tint. The thin edge of the crown base, which is adjacent to the gum, is not covered by the ceramic, so it may be visible when placed in the smile area.

    • Require significant tooth repair under the crown — up to 2 mm. For sufficient strength, the metal base must be quite thick. In order for such a crown to be able to be fixed on the tooth, the top layer — dentin must be cut off from the tooth. In some cases, the dentin is removed almost down to the pulp — the soft tissue of the tooth. To avoid inflammation, the pulp and nerve endings of the tooth are removed before the crown is placed.

    • The metal stains the soft gum tissue adjacent to the crown.

Care of metal-ceramic crowns

In order for a metal-ceramic crown to last longer, it requires as much care as your own teeth. For cleaning, use a comfortable toothbrush and familiar toothpaste, floss the gaps and clean the junction of the crown and gum tissue with an irrigator

Once every six months, you need to visit a hygienist and do a professional dental cleaning so that plaque does not accumulate around the crown, near the gingival margin and between the crown and other teeth.

Although less plaque tends to accumulate on a crown, daily diligent care can significantly extend its life.
