Ligature-free braces
Classic braces, which were the first to be massively used for orthodontic treatment, were ligature braces. There are 3 main elements in their construction: the arch, which is directly responsible for moving the teeth, the bracket locks, which are necessary for the correct position of the arch relative to each tooth, and the ligatures — the connecting element between the arch and the bracket.
With the advancement of orthodontic technology, ligature-free braces — the same arch and tooth locks, but without the additional link — ligature. The ligature-free bracket has a slot for the arch and a cover that is closed with a special tool and securely holds the arch in the slot.

c of ligature-free braces
-
Natural and less painful movement of teeth.
The main difficulty of bite correction with ligature braces — is the additional friction between the arch and the tightly held ligature. The arch, in order to return to the original (correct) position and pull the teeth, has to overcome the force of friction, which increases the load on the teeth many times. In ligature-free braces, the arch is held in the groove by a flap, but it slides freely inside the groove without creating additional pressure. -
Faster tooth movement even in difficult cases.
Due to the free movement unlimited by the ligature, the arc works much faster and more efficiently. Teeth can move a longer distance, which allows you to create a wide smile and sometimes avoid removal. -
Easier care.
The simpler and smaller the orthodontic design, the easier it is to maintain high-quality oral hygiene. Any additional element, such as a ligature, creates hard-to-reach places and provokes the accumulation of food residues.

This is why they are still actively used by orthodontists.

Ligature-free braces by digital technology
We mentioned above that ligature-free braces bring the desired results faster than traditional options. For those wishing to shorten treatment time even further, Damon braces (ceramic and metal) can be enhanced with Insignia's 3D treatment modeling technology. The initial bite condition is scanned, digitized, and the system calculates the course of treatment to the final result. The braces are customized to the patient and come ready-made in individual mouthguards with clear positioning. This predictive treatment minimizes errors and inaccuracies in the bite correction process.
Installation of ligature-free braces
Before braces are placed, teeth need to be carefully prepared for long-term orthodontic treatment:
-
To cure caries, pulpitis, periodontitis.
-
Eliminate inflammation of the soft tissues in the oral cavity.
-
To do a professional dental cleaning.
Once the doctor is satisfied that the mouth is completely healthy, the braces can be fixed. This process takes approximately 1-1.5 hours and takes place without pain or obvious discomfort for the patient. Teeth are prepared for fixation by successive etching, cleaning and drying of enamel. Next, an orthodontic adhesive is applied to the teeth, to which the brackets are glued on.
At the clinic “Konfidencia” the indirect braces fixation method is used. The brackets are pre-glued to an accurate impression of the patient's teeth, then transferred to a customized mouth guard. The mouth guard is placed over the teeth during retention, the braces are bonded to the teeth, and the mouth guard is removed. This method provides the most accurate positioning and speeds up the retention process.
After fixing the braces, the orthodontist places the arch in the grooves and closes the bracket covers with a special tool.
The treatment process for ligature-free braces
The very first thing a braces wearer faces — is the adaptation to the system. In the first few days, the sensation of moving teeth is particularly strong as the ligaments holding the roots of the teeth in the bone begin to stretch. Depending on their pain threshold, patients either tolerate these sensations relatively well or are unable to chew solid food for some time. Adaptation to ligature-free braces is much easier than ligature braces because the pressure on the teeth and tissues is not as intense.
Adaptations for ligature-free braces — are visits to the orthodontist to correct the system: replacing the arches, installing chains, elastics, arch bends, changing the position of the bracket. Self-ligating systems do not need frequent correction, so activations take place approximately every 2 months. After braces activation, there may be a slight soreness, because the action of the braces, to which the teeth and periodontium have already got used to for the last 2 months before activation, changes, and the oral cavity needs to adapt to the new sensations.
Brushing teeth with ligature-free braces
Although self-ligating braces do not contain extra parts that contribute to plaque buildup, they need to be cleaned just as thoroughly. Special orthodontic brushes — bracket and mono-bladed brushes, orthodontic brushes, hard-tipped superfloss (for easy use with braces) and irrigators are used for good hygiene. To prevent dental health with braces, professional oral hygiene is required at least once every six months.
