Correction of deep bite
Our patients most often come in complaining about misaligned teeth because it is visible and understandable. But it is possible to have visually straight teeth that are not aligned properly in three planes. The misalignment of the teeth is called a bite relationship.
Deep overbite — is a misalignment of the teeth in the vertical plane. In a normal bite, the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors by about one third. In this state, the incisors perform their function perfectly: even a thin piece of food can be bitten off with them.
But with a deep bite, the upper front teeth overlap the lower teeth by more than half of the crown. This is considered a pathology, the teeth do not fulfill their functions, the aesthetics and overall oral health deteriorate.
Causes of a deep bite
A malocclusion can be the result of distal occlusion — a misalignment of the teeth in the saggital plane, where the upper jaw protrudes forward relative to the lower jaw.
The formation of a deep bite is influenced by bad habits (prolonged sucking on pacifiers, pencils and other objects) and constant mouth breathing (in chronic rhinitis or adenoiditis).
A deep bite is also caused by the absence of side teeth — in this case, the upper teeth lose their natural support and sink lower.
The formation of the bite is usually influenced by a combination of factors, including heredity, habits, abnormal jaw development or tooth growth, diseases, trauma, etc.
Does every deep bite need to be treated?"
A deep bite does not always need to be treated. In the replacement dentition, when children's incisors are changing, a deep bite — is a normal stage of development. At this time, the permanent 6th teeth have not yet fully erupted and the unsupported tooth rows are low. During this period, the child is recommended to eat hard foods (apples, carrots), as active chewing stimulates blood flow and, accordingly, the jaws grow. It is desirable that a child with suspected pathology in the period of tooth growth is under the supervision of an orthodontist. In this way it will be possible to prevent or correct the bite in a short period of time.
If the deep bite is the result of distal position of the jaws, that is, with a small or shifted backward lower jaw, it must be treated. The fact is that the lower incisors, for which clamping with the upper — it is natural, will move up and without a stop in the upper ones, will begin to traumatize the mucosa. This situation is called a deep traumatic bite. Every day we use our teeth quite actively, and all this time the lower incisors will knock on the upper alveolar process (the place where the teeth grow from) and traumatize it, which will lead to the loss of upper teeth in adulthood.
It is also necessary to treat a deep bite, which accompanies an excessive inclination of the upper front teeth. This tilt dramatically increases the risk of trauma to the permanent incisors, so treatment solves 2 problems at once: the teeth get into a safe and correct position, and the overlap is correct.
Deep Bite Treatment
Treatment methods for deep bite are different, depending on age and associated dental pathology. In younger students it can be removable plates, myofunctional appliances or trainers, in adolescents or adults most often used non-removable apparatus — bracket-system.Biomechanics and nuances of treatment depend on what the causes of deep bite are, and what problems there are besides it. We need to take into account crowding of teeth, lack of space, narrowing of the jaw. Sometimes it is necessary to remove some teeth and create space to move others.
The doctor plans the optimal way to correct a deep bite based on the patient's profile. Very often the lower third of the face determines the treatment tactics: how best to correct a deep bite in order to have not only a correct and stable result after orthodontic treatment, but also, if possible, to improve the facial features (or not to worsen them in particularly difficult cases).
Despite its high prevalence, proper deep bite treatment requires excellent knowledge, experience, and the doctor's understanding of biomechanics. After all, it is the correct treatment that gives us what we want: beautiful aesthetic results, good function and stability.
