Aesthetic restoration of teeth: inlays, onlays

We tell you about restoring the aesthetics and function of teeth with microprosthetics
Reliability and high aesthetics
Installation time — from 2 weeks
from 45 320 Rub

At least once in our lives, almost all of us have experienced various unpleasant situations with our side teeth:

  • Acute or aching pain caused by caries;
  • A crack in the enamel that violates aesthetics;
  • Chipping of a living tooth caused by injury;
  • Chipping of the tooth wall after therapeutic treatment in the past;
  • The destruction of the old seal.

Situations can be many – the solution is one: going to the dentist.

And, as a rule, treatment of the distant chewing teeth cannot be delayed, as these are the teeth that are fully responsible for chewing function.

Operative restoration of a tooth in one visit with a filling

If our main goal – to solve the problem quickly, then the therapist can restore our tooth in one visit with composite photopolymerization materials.

This solution will ensure that we:

  • Quick relief from inconveniences;
  • Rapid restoration of acceptable chewing function of teeth;
  • Sufficiently high aesthetics of the seal due to modern materials;
  • The service life of the restoration is up to 5 years.

However, we must be prepared for a number of risks:

  • Aesthetic impairment over time: formation of a visible border between the restoration and the tooth, change in the texture of the filling;

  • Continued destruction of the tooth under the filling due to shrinkage of the composite material and incomplete adhesion of the restoration;

  • Tooth wall chipping if the restoration area was extensive;

  • Bite change due to incomplete restoration of chewing tooth function and tooth shape.

«We are all used to having our teeth treated therapeutically. Every patient has his favorite dentist-therapist with golden hands, to whom he goes all his life. We are so used to it: toothache – we go to put a filling. For us it is clear, it is quick and easy.

But over time, with the advent of new technologies, our doctors are already offering us more advanced solutions: inlays, onlays. But we are cautious about it: it's more expensive, it's microprosthetics - everything new scares us a little bit.

But remember what dentistry was like 20 years ago! And now everyone has forgotten about cement fillings and pain during treatment. We're getting used to the need for 3D imaging, using innovative whitening systems, aligning teeth with the latest generation of clear braces, treating pulpitis with a microscope. And inlays and onlays will soon be a common treatment method because it ensures long-term aesthetic results and dental health in the future.»

Aesthetic restoration with inlay, onlay

If factors such as:

Absolute invisibility of the restoration;

  • The beauty of teeth in the future due to the lack of erasability;
  • Long-lasting effect for up to 10 years;
  • Proper bite and, as a result, even teeth

In this case, the general practitioner will recommend a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon and a complete thorough aesthetic restoration of the tooth using an indirect restoration method: inlay or onlay.

Advantages of indirect restorations

Advantages:
  • Aesthetics and naturalness
    Restorations made by the indirect method are very beautiful, perfectly matched and completely invisible. Inlay or onlay is made with the help of computer modeling, which means it reconstructs the tooth as accurately as possible, perfectly restores the relief and shape. After fixation, it will not shrink, will not cause an abnormal fit and, as a result, will ensure that the restoration will be invisible throughout its entire lifetime.

  • The beauty and health of teeth
    We manufacture the restoration outside the patient's mouth, with the help of computer technology in the laboratory, which makes it possible to fully individualize the inlay, onlay, make it absolutely accurate continuation of the tooth with a perfect fit, which will prevent the destruction of the tooth under the restoration and keep the tooth healthy throughout its life.

  • Correct bite and a youthful smile
    When inlays and onlays are created in the laboratory, their function is tested in the articulator (a special device that simulates the movement of the patient's jaws). In this way, the technician in the laboratory is able to restore all the lost cusps, fully restore the contacts that should be with the teeth of the opposite jaw, which allows to maintain the correct bite of the teeth and, as a result, the absence of erosion (which adds extra years to the smile).

  • Permanent result
    The inlay, onlay is much stronger than a composite filling because it is made of materials that are absolutely resistant to wear. The inlay, onlay is no longer fade-resistant and has high durability, so it lasts more than 10 years, keeping the tooth beautiful and healthy for a long time.

Disadvantages:
  • High cost of restorations.

What materials are used/what are inlays and onlays made of?

Inlays and onlays are made of ceramic, zirconium dioxide, precious metals or porcelain.
It can also be made of composite materials, but the service life of such a restoration, although made in a laboratory, will be reduced by about half, because the composite is not comparable in strength to ceramic or zirconium dioxide.

At «Konfidencia», doctors recommend zirconia dioscide restorations.

Advantages of zirconium dioxide inlays, onlays

Advantages:
  • Imperceptibility
    Zirconia and ceramic restorations have aesthetics that are very close to the natural properties of enamel and dentin.

  • Durability
    Zirconium dioxide is a material that can withstand exposure to very high temperatures, quite strong shocks. It has a high density, strength.

  • Hypoallergenic
    Zirconium dioxide does not cause allergies.

  • Lightness
    Zirconia restorations are very lightweight compared to metal structures.

Disadvantages:
  • High cost of restorations.

First reception

During the first visit, there is a consultation, a preparatory stage for diagnosis and preparation of the tooth.

During the consultation, you share all your worries with the doctor, then take a 3D picture. Based on the results of a CT scan and an external examination, the doctor offers you all treatment options that you discuss together and choose the best one for you.

The doctor treats the tooth and makes an impression using a special modeling wax, selects the color of the restoration.

Then a temporary protection made of a special plastic material is installed in the treated area until the next visit.

Diagnosis and fabrication of the restoration

Based on the 3D image and using the patient's impressions, the doctor makes a detailed diagnosis of the jaw alignment. Based on the diagnostic data, he performs computer modeling of the correct jaw alignment, recreates the shape and relief of the tooth and draws a model of the future inlay or onlay.

Then, in the dental laboratory, using the orthopedist's calculations and the patient's impressions, the technician fabricates the finished inlay or onlay.

Second reception

At the second visit, the prosthodontist will remove the temporary guard and try on the finished restoration. Only when the inlay or onlay is a perfect fit will the dentist cement it into the tooth opening using special cements or dental glue. When finalized, the inlay or onlay will be polished for a natural shine.

There may be a little discomfort at first: the patient may feel a little strange with the new tooth surface, but this feeling will soon pass.

Guarantees

The warranty period for orthopedic constructions in the clinic «Konfidencia» is two years.

When is a tab used and when is an overlay used?

Inlays or onlays can be used depending on the need, the affected area of the tooth, the bite condition, and the patient's aesthetic desires, and can be shaped in a variety of ways.

Inlays are often used in cases of wear in the lateral areas of the tooth to restore lost height, function, and relief. If the tooth has all the walls of the crown of the tooth intact and we need to restore the interior cavity, we will use an inlay.

  • The tab is used to restore a small cavity in the center of the tooth.
  • The overlay is used for restoration when one or more tooth mounds are completely overlapped.

But the principle of the work is quite identical, as is the cost.

Onlay or veneer?

Onlays are used in restoring chewing teeth, veneers – are «onlays» on front teeth.
