Removal of wisdom teeth (eighth teeth)
Eighth teeth or wisdom teeth erupt later than the others, at an age when the jaw and soft tissues are already fully formed. The density of the bone and the gum layer make it very difficult for the eighth teeth to come out. In addition, there is often simply not enough room for them in a narrow jaw. Another peculiarity of wisdom teeth is the abnormal structure of the roots: they are curved or intertwined with each other.
As the wisdom tooth forms, it tries to emerge from the gum, which can be painful and dangerous for neighboring teeth and oral health. The wisdom tooth can erupt with weakened enamel, decay and even pulpitis, pressing on neighboring teeth, damaging their roots and causing inflammation. The erupted tooth sometimes occupies the wrong position, erupts incompletely and is poorly hygienic.
Removal of eighth teeth — is a subject of debate among many dentists: some recommend removal at once, others recommend leaving it in and treating it as needed.
When wisdom teeth don't need to be extracted:
- If there is enough space for a wisdom tooth in the dentition and nothing prevents its exit.
- If the eight has cut through completely and is healthy.
- If the tooth is needed as a support for prosthetics.
When wisdom teeth extraction is recommended:
- The eighth tooth has no place in the jaw. If the wisdom tooth has nowhere to go, it can cause damage to other teeth: it can move them when erupting, create crowding, and ruin your bite.
- Partial retention. Sometimes the eights are erupted only half or a third, some come out at an incline. This situation provokes the accumulation of bacteria — the tooth is difficult to clean thoroughly, as well as, inflammation of soft tissues.
- The wisdom tooth presses on neighboring teeth, damaging their enamel and destroying their roots. In addition, the pressure in the bone tissue causes headaches and reaches the ear.
- Wisdom teeth are often characterized by dystopia — improper positioning. It can be inclined or horizontal, making it difficult for them to come out and jeopardizing the health of the roots of neighboring teeth.
- If the tooth has erupted with inflammation. Eights are cut through a very dense layer of bone tissue, so the output is often already decayed or pulpitis.
- The tooth has erupted at an incline and is traumatizing the mucous membranes, tongue.
- Gingival «hood» over the eighth tooth, formed during the exit of the tooth. Such a tooth is difficult to clean, so plaque and bacteria remain under the soft tissues, forming pericoronaritis — inflammation of the soft tissues around the tooth.
- Retained wisdom tooth cyst — an indication for urgent extraction.
