Twin Blocks
The main objective of orthodontic treatment for children — is to influence jaw growth and create conditions for the eruption of all permanent teeth. Children's appliances do not straighten the teeth directly, but promote the correct development of the jaw. One such appliance that stimulates the growth of the lower jaw is called Twin Block.
Twin Block – is a removable orthodontic appliance for both the upper and lower jaw. The Twin-Block was created in 1977 by British orthodontist William Clark and, due to its high efficiency, is still actively used by orthodontists around the world for the treatment of children and adolescents.
The design of the paired units has been greatly improved to be more patient-friendly, but at the same time no less effective»

Why is Twin Block called that?
Twin Block consists of two plates – for upper and lower jaw. On both plates in the area of the lateral teeth there is a design feature of the appliance – plastic twin blocks. It is these twin blocks, which act only together, that gave the orthodontic appliance its name.
The design of the appliance also includes metal arches for aligning the teeth, supporting clasps and screws in the base of the base to widen the tooth row.
Each Twin Block – is an individual design, which is made by a dental technician and can include various additional elements (arches, pushers, hooks, etc.) to maximize the effectiveness of treatment. The structure of the appliance is designed by the orthodontist based on the clinical picture and the goals set.

In what cases is the Twin Block used?
Twin Block is most effective for the treatment of sagittal forms of malocclusion – distal or mesial occlusion in the active growth phase of the child (from 8 to 13-14 years of age)
How does Twin Block work?
The paired plastic blocks on the upper and lower plates of the appliance hold the jaw in the correct position, thus controlling jaw growth and correcting the bite in the anteroposterior direction.
During treatment, the orthodontist grinds the plastic blocks of the appliance to erupt the side teeth (molars) in the correct ratio.
If it is necessary to expand the tooth rows, a screw is included in the plastic base of the appliance, which must be independently screwed (by the patient or parent) according to the regime recommended by the orthodontist.
Stages of apparatus creation
After all diagnostic data is analyzed and the orthodontist draws up a treatment plan, the appliance creation phase begins.
The orthodontist takes impressions of the upper and lower jaws and determines the required position of the jaws in the Twin Block. The orthodontist submits the design scheme and all the necessary wishes for the appliance to the dental laboratory.
After fabrication, the appliance is tried on in the oral cavity, adjusted or polished by the doctor if necessary.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Twin Block
-
Thanks to the individual structure of the appliance, the orthodontist solves the necessary tasks as efficiently as possible;
-
The device does not compromise oral hygiene and can be easily removed and brushed in the usual way;
-
Quick adaptation to the apparatus;
-
There is no need to remove the device when eating.
-
Since the appliance is removable, the result of treatment depends not only on the orthodontist, but also on the patient's responsible approach to treatment. If the recommendations are not followed and the Twin Block is not worn properly, the treatment result will not be achieved and the optimal time for jaw growth and bite correction will be missed.
«The therapeutic effect is achieved much faster compared to other known devices that require removal during meals.»

For the most effective treatment results, follow your doctor's recommendations for wearing the appliance and visit your orthodontist regularly for appliance activation and treatment monitoring.
Care of the Twin Block unit
The appliance should be rinsed daily in running water, cleaned with a toothbrush and soap if necessary. If the appliance is heavily soiled, cleaning tablets for removable dentures can be used.
The Twin Block should only be stored in a special container – this way you will avoid deformation of the structure and breakage of the unit.
