Powerscope appliance for the correction of distal bite in adolescents
The Powerscope appliance — is a state-of-the-art orthodontic appliance that is used to treat complex cases of distal bite in combination with braces treatment.
Distal overbite is one of the most common pathologies in which the upper jaw is strongly protruding forward relative to the lower jaw, while the lower jaw is locked in a posterior position, resulting in underdevelopment of the lower jaw.
The use of braces or eliners alone is usually not enough to correct severe forms of distal bite, as large tooth movements or even jaw size corrections must be made. During the period of active growth at the age of 12-14 years, jaw development can be influenced by the use of class II correctors, which includes the PowerScope. The device moves the lower jaw forward by constant force and restrains the growth of the upper jaw.
Design and operation of the PowerScope
PowerScope consists of two tubes of different diameters that slide inside each other thanks to a telescopic mechanism. Inside the tubes is a spring that creates a force on the lower tooth row. The tubes are connected to hinge mechanisms that allow for the usual jaw movements during chewing and articulation. The entire telescopic beam and hinge structure is attached to the arch of the bracket system between the upper and lower jaw on both sides.
In contrast to other Class II aligners, the PowerScope is not made individually from jaw impressions, but is a universal instrument. Thanks to the adjustable beam length, the appliance can be adjusted to each patient's parameters.
How is the Powerscope appliance fitted?
Powerscope is attached with «paws» to the arch of the bracket system between the 6th and 7th teeth on the upper tooth row and between the 4th and 5th teeth on the lower tooth row. The orthodontist adjusts the appliance to the size of the patient's mouth. Appliance placement is quick and uncomfortable.
The orthodontist visits with the appliance are as frequent as braces activation, on average once every 1-1.5 months.
How to care for Powerscope?
To maintain the effectiveness of the appliance for the duration of treatment, it is important to take care of your oral hygiene. It is recommended that you brush your teeth regularly using a mono-bladed toothbrush, toothbrushes and irrigator to clean the hard-to-reach areas where the device is fixed. Also, avoid eating hard and sticky foods that can damage the structure.
