Ceramic veneers and lumineers for teeth
When we talk about restoration and aesthetics, we immediately imagine a Hollywood smile. One of the ways to get it is through orthopedic tooth restoration technology using veneers. Veneers were once invented in Hollywood. And now they have conquered the whole world.
What are ceramic veneers?
Ceramic veneer (from the English veneer)– is a ceramic thin onlay on a tooth that is used to recreate the outer layer of the tooth.
It allows you to change the shape, size and color of a tooth, correct its position or close gaps between teeth.
The thickness of the veneer averages ~0.3 – 0.5mm and varies depending on the patient's situation.
Lumineers and veneers – differences and what is the difference
There are also ultra-thin veneers, which are ~0.2 mm thick. Their use involves minimally invasive (gentle) treatment of the teeth, if the specific clinical situation allows it.
Lumineers– these are ultra-thin ceramic veneers, which are made by patented technology in a factory in the United States. Lumineers can only be placed by a company certified by the company
Veneers: pros and cons
-
Veneers can be bonded to your teeth, leaving your teeth alive without removing nerves.
-
Aesthetics is also a very significant factor. Restorations with veneers are very close to the natural aesthetics of the tooth tissue. Often, restorations created with them can be even more aesthetically pleasing than natural tooth tissue.
-
Minimal tooth processing. Veneers can sometimes be used to fabricate restorations with virtually no tooth processing, just polishing the surface to allow the restoration to bond with the tooth tissue.
-
A veneer restoration is quite durable. The service life of modern ceramic products exceeds 10 years (compared to tooth restoration with filling (composite) materials, which do not last long).
-
The high cost of restorations.
-
Several stages of restoration creation.
Orthopedic doctor's consultation
The stage at which the patient shares all his problems and wishes, and the doctor performs a visual examination of the oral cavity and manual diagnosis of joints and dental function.
Diagnosis and creation of a smile design
This is the stage of research, computer and wax modeling of the desired smile of the patient. At the first visit, the patient's face and smile are photographed, 3D diagnostics, and casts are taken. Then a temporary wax model of the patient's smile is created in the laboratory, and at the second visit, 2 weeks after diagnosis, you will already be able to try it on.
It is very important that the model is made before the teeth are treated and once the smile model is tried on, the patient has ample time to decide whether to proceed with treatment, make adjustments to the process, or forgo treatment.
The patient can walk around with the time model for a few days before making a decision, so that they can understand their feelings in detail and consult with family and friends before moving on to the next steps.
And if the prosthetic treatment process continues, the same model is attached to the teeth each time until the permanent veneers are fixed.
Oral sanitation
This stage includes professional oral hygiene and treatment to restore the function of the teeth – this is the longest preparatory period before prosthetic treatment.
Treatment of teeth for veneers
Dental treatment takes quite a long time, because it is often performed with magnification, using a microscope. If this is the aesthetic area of the front teeth, the procedure may take 3-5 hours depending on the number of teeth being prepared and the area of preparation. If the patient cannot withstand prolonged treatment, we break it down into stages, trying to make the process the most comfortable for the patient. After processing, casts are made again, which are sent to the laboratory for the manufacture of permanent veneers. The sharpened teeth are closed with the same temporary model that was made at the stage of smile design. It is attached with special silicone keys, the voids in the model are filled with material to make wearing comfortable.
Fixation of veneers
First of all, the finished designs are tried on in order to make sure that everything is in order. And if the patient is satisfied with everything, the fixation process begins. Fixing veneers on treated teeth is a very thorough process, which takes about 3-5 hours, as well as processing, depending on the amount of work. There are certain fixation protocols that have stages that cannot be violated, as this can lead to problems in the form of cementation of veneers. If, for some reason, the designs did not fit, they are sent to the laboratory for correction, and the patient waits for a repeat appointment with a newly installed time model.
Veneer care
Hygiene does not imply anything special and complicated: twice a day brush your teeth with ordinary toothpaste and brush – but it is very important, and it is absolutely necessary to take care of any constructions, as well as your own teeth.
«Quite often we explain to patients that a veneer does not change color. This is true because it consists of a ceramic mass, which does not absorb any colorants if its surface is not damaged or porous. Sometimes patients confuse this with the fact that there is no need for maintenance.»
Lack of hygiene will lead to the accumulation of plaque and tartar, which can provoke carious processes. Since the veneer is most often fixed on a living tooth, this is particularly important. Decay can also affect the surface that has not been treated for the veneer: decay can occur on the inside, in the oral cavity, or between the teeth.
The doctor's task is to create aesthetics, the correct shape. The patient's task is to take care of hygiene, to maintain the oral cavity in proper condition.
Are there any contraindications to veneers?
Contraindications are relative: for example, lack of chewing teeth – which can lead to breakage, chipping, etc.
But breakages and chips can also be traced on their teeth: abrasion, the presence of tooth mobility due to the absence of a chewing group, the presence of enamel chips.
This means that the approach to restoration must be comprehensive and rational, and in this case planning is very important. Aesthetic restoration is short-lived without restoring dental function (bite correction, implantation, periodontal disease treatment, endodontic treatment followed by restoration of the chewing surface of the tooth, etc.) This preparation sometimes takes a long time, but it will provide a beautiful smile for a long time.
The patient always has a choice, he or she can opt for an alternative option without restoring the function of the teeth. In this case, the doctor's task – to tell him in detail about all the risks.
A prerequisite for veneers is a complete oral cavity sanitation (professional hygiene, caries treatment).
Warranty service
The Russian Ministry of Health recommends a 1-year warranty on veneers.
In the clinic «Konfidencia» the warranty period is 2 years. If the patient observes the conditions of personal hygiene, excludes the possibility of mechanical damage to the veneers and regular follow-up visits to the attending physician once every 6 months, we will repair any damage to the veneers free of charge.
If the patient refuses the doctor's recommendations to restore the function of the teeth, the veneers are not covered under warranty.
Composite veneers – what are they?
Composite veneers differ from ceramic veneers only in material.
There are composites available for technical use. Composite veneers are also made in the laboratory using a photopolymerization lamp. Given the properties of the material, they have much less mineral components and become rough over time, damaging the surface.
Sometimes this design is needed, but it is more of a temporary restoration that we need here and now for some purpose directly, it can last for a few years. But it is not a permanent kind of restoration.
For example, composite veneers – an excellent solution before orthodontic treatment with braces, if there is such a request from the patient. The bracket system can be safely bonded to composite veneers, unlike ceramic veneers.
