How long do braces wear?
The doctor's answer
The length of orthodontic treatment depends on age, individual characteristics of the patient, complexity of the case and type of bracket system.
Average orthodontic treatment time by age:
- Children 5 years to 14 — removable appliances or partial braces, eliners — several months to 1 year old
- Adolescents — braces, aligners — 1-2 years
- Adult — braces, aligners — 1.5-2.5 years
These figures are very approximate, and the doctor will only be able to give a specific treatment time after diagnosis.
The type of braces also affects the treatment time: self-ligating braces are much faster than ligature braces. Most of our adult patients choose self-ligating braces.
Faster braces can be removed if you follow your orthodontist's recommendations: wear elastics, don't miss appointments, and don't eat hard foods to prevent the braces from coming off.
The orthodontists at our clinic work in active leveling concept, which allows for shorter orthodontic treatment timeframes. In some clinical cases, we are able to complete adult orthodontic treatment in 8-12 months.
