TMJ subluxation – is a displacement of the TMJ joint head outside the joint fossa with subsequent self-recovery. This condition can be asymptomatic or accompanied by crunching, clicking and pain in the temporomandibular joint.

Treatment of TMJ subluxation is performed by a gnatologist. For a thorough diagnosis, the gnatologist will perform palpation and various functional stress tests on the joint, prescribe additional studies such as CT and MRI of the joint.

Treatment of TMJ subluxation begins with finding the correct position of the articular head using various techniques (aqualizer, Koisa apparatus, aquasplint, etc.). Then the gnatologist makes a special device (joint splint) to hold the joint in the right position, adapt the muscles and ligamentous apparatus. Splint treatment takes an average of 4-6 months and depends on the initial symptoms and dynamics of improvement.

Since changing the position of the joint changes the habitual closure of the teeth, the final stage of treatment is orthodontic treatment and/ or orthopedic restoration of teeth to preserve the result of splint therapy and keep the TMJ head in the correct position.
