The doctor's answer
Dislocation of the TMJ – one of the links in the development of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The cartilaginous disc of the joint performs a shock-absorbing function during the movement of the lower jaw and protects the bony surfaces of the joint from destruction. The disc is held in the correct position by the ligaments of the joint, but when they are stretched and the head of the joint is misaligned, the disc is displaced. When the jaw moves, the disc can return to its correct position against the head of the joint (displaced disc with repositioning) or remain displaced (non-replaced disc).
Signs of a displaced vnhs disk:
- crunch
- click
- joint pain
- difficulty opening the mouth
- frequent headaches and tinnitus
A gnathologist can diagnose a displaced disc after examining an MRI of the joint during various movements of the lower jaw. Treatment is carried out with a special mouth guard – a splint that will hold the jaw and joint in the correct position and protect the disc and bone structures from destruction.
