How to care for a mouth guard?
The doctor's answer
The care of orthodontic mouthguards, whether it is an eliner to correct the bite or a retention mouthguard, is quite simple and follows the same algorithm:
- Wash and sanitize your hands thoroughly before removing the mouth guard.
- Remove the mouth guard gently, starting with the back teeth, first on one side and then on the other. Do not pull or tug the mouth guard with force if it is an eLiner — this can break the attachment.
- Rinse the mouth guard under cool running water, using a toothbrush and toothpaste. You can use an ordinary, inexpensive toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your e-liners.
- Once a week, the mouth guard can be placed for 15 minutes in a beaker of dissolved denture cleaner “Korega.”.
- For an aligner or retention cap, your doctor will give you a special storage box. In the case of aligners, we recommend that you immediately sign it with your name and phone number in case you forget it in the restaurant :)
Prohibitions in the care of mouthguards:
- Do not wash your mouthguard in hot water or hold over steam — the plastic and silicone deform at high temperatures and the mouthguard cannot be returned to its original shape.
- Do not eat in mouthguards, as when chewing food, mouthguards will close on each other and deform or break due to friction.
- You can not smoke and drink coloring drinks in mouthguards, as they will change color and lose their transparency.
If the mouth guard or aligner is cracked or broken, inform your doctor about it. Retention caps are made from casts quickly enough.
In the case of aligners, just put on the next or previous pair of aligners. If the lost aligner is worn for 7 days or more, then you can safely switch to the next pair. If it is less than 7 days, put on the previous pair (it may be more difficult to sit on the teeth, make sure that it settles) and wear it for 14 days.
