How do you put on and wear a mouth guard?
The doctor's answer
Retention mouth guards after orthodontic treatment are necessary to consolidate the result of treatment and prevent relapses.
After orthodontic treatment, we give patients 2 mouth guards:
- a full mouth guard on the upper dentition for use at night.
- partial mouth guard from canine to canine on the lower dentition for insurance in case of breakage of the non-removable retainer.
Retention caps are quite elastic, so they are easy to put on:
- you only need to put a mouth guard on clean teeth.
- the mouthpiece itself must also be washed before use.
- put on a mouth guard and make sure that it fits to all teeth and does not cause discomfort
We recommend wearing your retention mouth guard at night — this way it won't interfere with your talking, eating and smiling during the day.
You can not eat in the mouthpiece, as it will break from friction when chewing. Plastic absorbs dyes, so it is not recommended to drink coloring drinks and smoke in it.
Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the mouthpiece. Do not clean in hot water and over steam, because it will deform.
