Can braces be placed on one jaw?
The doctor's answer
At first glance, it seems perfectly logical to put braces on only 1 jaw, if, for example, you are concerned about uneven teeth on the upper jaw. But in the practice of orthodontists, placing braces on only one jaw – it is rather a rare exception.
Why does this happen? Unaligned teeth (even on the same jaw) hide an improper bite. You see uneven teeth, and the orthodontist – a misaligned bite and many problems lurking.
Simply aligning teeth on one jaw without correcting the bite will result in unstable results, abnormal tooth erosion, chipped and cracked enamel, gum and TMJ problems.
All of these problems can lead to unstable results, abnormal tooth erosion, chipped and cracked enamel, gum and TMJ problems.
Wearing a bracket system on one jaw will change the alignment between the upper and lower teeth, which means a new bite will be formed, but in most cases it will also be incorrect. Such an intervention will worsen the condition of the entire dentoalveolar system and lead to the formation of new problems.
In what cases is braces on 1 jaw possible?
- If your bite is correct and your teeth are slightly uneven, there will be little or no change in the alignment of your teeth.
- In orthodontic preparation for prosthetics. In such cases, the orthodontist only solves a localized problem – for example, pushing back a tooth that has leaned into the area of the missing tooth and creating space for implants and dentures. In such cases, it is possible to install braces on only a few teeth.
- Partial bracket system in children in a shift bite. This system is 4 braces on the front teeth and two braces on the side teeth. The purpose of this system is not to align the teeth, but to create space for the permanent teeth to erupt properly.
The decision to install braces on only 1 jaw is made in conjunction with an orthodontist after a thorough diagnosis and determination of the feasibility and safety of such treatment.
