Do braces damage tooth enamel?
The doctor's answer
The main myth in the world of orthodontic treatment, that it is the bracket that damages the enamel, is now completely untenable.
The bracket is fixed to the tooth tightly (if this condition is not met, the bracket will simply peel off) on a material containing fluoride. This protects the enamel for the duration of treatment. Enamel can only deteriorate with poor hygiene, as the brackets encourage plaque buildup. If the tooth surface around the bracket is not cleaned sufficiently, we will get areas of demineralization (initial decay) that are different in color from normal enamel, such as white spots. Enamel can be restored during and after orthodontic treatment with special strengthening gels, both during clinical appointments and in home care.
