Removable orthodontic appliances – are structures for correcting the bite, position of teeth or muscle function, which can be easily removed by the patient when necessary and put on at a convenient time. Depending on the treatment goals, the doctor uses different types of appliances, which we will familiarize you with in this article.

Removable devices for the treatment of adults

For the treatment of adult malocclusion, non-removable structures — bracket systems are mainly used. A classic removable plate designed for children will not be able to correct the bite when all permanent teeth have erupted.
For adults, there are 2 types of removable devices for correcting bite and fixing the result of treatment:

  • aligners — a set of clear, customized mouthguards that gradually move your teeth into the correct position.
  • retention mouthguards — transparent mouth guards for night use that keep even teeth after removing braces or aligners

Removable appliances for pediatric treatment

In most cases, orthodontists and patients refer to removable orthodontic appliances as plates or mouth guards, which are used to correct the bite in children.

Removable appliances are most effective in the early replacement bite (6 to 9 years of age), as jaw growth is active during this period. At this age, the orthodontist can influence the following parameters of the dentoalveolar system:

  • the position of the erupting permanent teeth,
  • strengthening or restraining the growth of the jaws to form a harmonious profile of the child.

Treatment in the replacement bite – is the first stage of orthodontic treatment, which avoids the formation of bite abnormalities associated with the disproportionate size of the upper and lower jaws.

Types of removable appliances for children

In this section, we will introduce you to the most famous types of orthodontic appliances and tell you which appliances are preferred by the doctors of «Konfidencia» Clinic.

Removable plates for bite correction in children

The plates are an appliance consisting of a plastic base and metal wire elements. The metal elements have two main functions – to hold the appliance in the child's mouth and to exert pressure on the teeth to move them. The design of children's plate apparatuses also includes a screw, which parents independently screw up according to the mode prescribed by the doctor. When the screw is loosened, forces are created to direct and change the growth of the jaws and the position of the teeth.

In what cases is a record necessary?

  • If there is not enough space for permanent teeth to erupt
  • When the dentition is narrowed
  • In case of incorrect position of individual teeth

The main disadvantage of such devices is the possibility of removing them independently – a young patient may not wear the device for a sufficient number of hours, forget to put it on or even lose it. The effectiveness of treatment in this case is practically reduced to zero, and we risk losing the most important thing – the time during which children are actively growing.

As a more effective analog of plates, orthodontists of the clinic «Konfidencia» use fixed appliance Marco Rosa. In structure, the appliance resembles a plate – plastic wings, screw and metal spurs. The appliance with the help of a special material is fixed on the baby teeth and cannot be removed independently. Parents screw the screw directly in the child's mouth with a special key. It is the permanent fixation of the appliance in the oral cavity that guarantees the achievement of the planned result.

Bi-jaw removable appliances

Braces that are used for the upper and lower jaw at the same time. They can be separate (e.g., as in the Twin-Block appliance) or «bonded» together (e.g., in the Andresen-Heupler monobloc appliance, Klumpt activator, etc.). Plates for two jaws at once are used for correction of distal bite and growth and developmental lag of the lower jaw. These plates keep the mandible in the correct position, which guides and activates the growth of the mandible.
Twin-Block apparatus

The Frenkel apparatus also belongs to the bicuspid removable apparatus. Externally, it looks quite massive, but in use it is quite comfortable and lightweight. The design includes plastic lip pelottes, cheek shields, a tongue flap if necessary, and metal fixation elements.
The apparatus is prescribed if the cause of malocclusion is the presence of bad habits in the child (pronounced lip and cheek tone, biting the lip, putting the tongue between the teeth, etc.). Frenkel's apparatus is also called a regulator of function, that is its main — it is the adjustment of such work of muscles and tongue, which will ensure the formation of a correct bite. Lip pelottes and cheek shields reduce the pressure of soft tissues (lips and cheeks), which normalizes lip tone, tongue position, and stimulates jaw growth.

Pre-Orthodontic Trainer

The trainer is a silicone double-jaw mouthpiece. When the child puts it on, the teeth fall into special recesses, and the jaw is fixed in the correct position. The main feature of this removable device is its functional orientation – In addition to a small correction of the position of the teeth, the trainer effectively affects the formation of nasal breathing, the correct position of the tongue and lips, eliminates the bad habits of putting the tongue between the teeth, sucking fingers and other objects.

Baby Aligners

Baby aligners are a set of transparent plastic caps that are made individually using 3D modeling. After scanning the jaws with a special device, the orthodontist plans to move each tooth, expand the dentition, and create a place for permanent eruption. All orthodontic treatment from beginning to end is first recreated digitally. Individually made mouth guards perfectly repeat the shape of the teeth and direct them towards the planned movement.

Advantages and disadvantages of removable appliances

Removable appliances — are an effective tool that allows you to quickly achieve the necessary results in childhood. НBut the main difficulty of treatment is that the responsibility for the result of treatment lies with the parents and the child. It is important to wear the device and follow all recommendations, otherwise the treatment will be useless.
The ability to remove the apparatus, on the other hand, is also the biggest plus. If a child is shy when meeting new people, preparing for an important holiday or event, the devices can be removed for a short period of time.

Each removable orthodontic appliance has its own indications, rules of use and modes of wear. At the stage of consultation and diagnosis, the orthodontist makes an individual treatment plan, determines the cause of malocclusion and the need for early orthodontic treatment. In some cases, the orthodontist can offer several variants of appliances (including removable or non-removable), and parents together with the young patient can choose the most optimal option, suitable for the character, desires and lifestyle of the child. With sufficient motivation and self-discipline of the patient, compliance with all recommendations and wearing regimen, removable appliances can achieve impressive results of orthodontic treatment.
